Previous orchestral experience includes playing for Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra during his school years, with whom he performed works such as Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and Elgar’s Cello Concerto at venues including Gloucester Cathedral and Cheltenham Town Hall. His orchestral playing continued at university where he became a member of the department’s chamber orchestra and the Music Society’s symphony and philharmonic orchestras. As well as playing works from the symphonic repertoire, the latter two orchestras also accompanied the university choir in performances of Mozart’s Requiem, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and Haydn’s Nelson Mass.
